Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island — about 50 km from north to south. The airport is in the south, the main town is mid-west, and the northern national park is a serious distance from both. If you’re planning to cover more than your immediate resort area, you need to think about transport before you arrive.
The short version
- Grab is the default for single trips in and around Duong Dong and the airport — book from your phone, no negotiation, clear price
- Scooter rental is the most practical option for exploring the whole island — roughly 120,000–170,000 ₫ per day (US$5–7)
- Hired car with driver makes sense for day trips to the north or south, especially for groups or families — 700,000–1,200,000 ₫ for a half or full day depending on vehicle size
- Metered taxis exist and are legitimate; Grab is usually cheaper for the same trip
- Tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis (xe om) are available but less common than they once were
Grab
Grab operates on Phu Quoc and covers most of the island reasonably well. GrabCar and GrabBike are both available. Service is most reliable in and around Duong Dong, along Long Beach, and to and from the airport. In the far northwest (near Ganh Dau and VinWonders) and far south (An Thoi, Bai Khem), coverage gets patchier — fewer drivers, longer wait times, and occasionally no cars available at all.
For most visitors, Grab handles the majority of in-town trips without any issue.
Typical fares (GrabCar)
- Airport (PQC) → Duong Dong (~10 km): 120,000–200,000 ₫ (US$5–8)
- Airport → Long Beach resort strip: 130,000–220,000 ₫ (US$5–9)
- Duong Dong → Ong Lang (~8 km north): 80,000–130,000 ₫ (US$3–5)
- Duong Dong → An Thoi/Sunset Town (~25 km south): 200,000–300,000 ₫ (US$8–12)
- Bai Vong ferry port → Duong Dong (~25 km): 150,000–250,000 ₫ (US$6–10)
GrabBike runs roughly half those prices. Fine for solo trips and short distances; less practical with luggage or in heavy rain.
One practical note: download Grab and register your card before you arrive in Vietnam — the app setup is much easier with a reliable connection and time on your side.
Scooter rental
A scooter is the most satisfying way to move around Phu Quoc if you’re comfortable riding one. It gives you the flexibility to stop at Ong Lang on the way north, detour to a fish sauce factory, or catch the road along the west coast at whatever pace you choose.
Rental prices run approximately 120,000–170,000 ₫ per day (US$5–7) for a standard automatic scooter, depending on the shop and the bike’s age and condition. Semi-automatic and manual bikes are at the lower end; newer or larger bikes cost a bit more.
Rental shops are concentrated along Duong Dong’s main streets and around Long Beach. Many hotels and guesthouses also have bikes available or can arrange rentals through a partner.
What you’ll typically need:
- Passport or a copy (some shops hold your passport; others take a copy or a deposit instead — negotiate which you’re comfortable with)
- Cash deposit, typically 500,000–1,000,000 ₫
Practical things worth knowing:
- Helmets are legally required and should be on the bike — inspect the chin strap before accepting it
- Petrol stations are common along the main roads; smaller ones at the ends of the island are not, so fill up before heading far north or south
- Road quality on the main coastal roads is good; some tracks into the national park or to remote beaches are rougher
- International driving licences are technically required; in practice, most rentals don’t check them, but you’d be riding without valid coverage if anything went wrong — factor that into your decision
- The island’s roads are not complicated, but the north–south highway carries fast-moving local traffic; ride with care
For a day covering the north — Ganh Dau, VinWonders, Rach Vem, the national park — budget for a full tank and allow 4–5 hours of riding plus stops. The south (An Thoi, Bai Sao, Bai Khem) is closer from Duong Dong, around 1.5–2 hours of relaxed riding each way.
Taxis
Metered taxis operate on Phu Quoc. Mai Linh is the most recognisable operator. Taxis are legitimate and the meters work — the main downside is price: they typically run 20–40% more than a Grab for the same route, and availability can be inconsistent away from the town centre and airport.
If you’re at a restaurant or resort without Grab coverage and need a ride, asking the front desk to call a taxi is a reliable backup.
Airport touts: ignore anyone at the airport arrivals area offering fixed-rate transfers. The common offer is US$20–30 into Duong Dong. A Grab or metered taxi for the same trip costs a third of that.
Hired car with driver
For group travel, families, or anyone wanting to see the north or south in a single day without the physical effort of a scooter, a hired car with driver is the practical choice.
Typical rates for 2026:
- 4–5 seater car, half-day (4 hours): approximately 700,000–900,000 ₫ (US$28–36)
- 7-seater van, full day (8 hours), north island route: approximately 900,000–1,200,000 ₫ (US$36–48)
- 7-seater van, full day, south island route: approximately 700,000–900,000 ₫ (US$28–36)
Prices vary depending on the distance covered and how much waiting time is involved at stops. Agree on the itinerary and price before you set off — and confirm whether fuel and tolls are included (they usually are, but worth asking).
Your hotel can usually arrange a car and driver. Independent drivers can also be found by asking at the ferry port, or through local guesthouses. The quality of English varies; apps like Google Translate handle the gap fine for agreeing on stops.
A hired car is worth considering for the north island particularly — Rach Vem (Starfish Beach), VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari, and the national park are spread across a large area with limited Grab coverage. See the Phu Quoc day trips and north island guide for what’s out there.
Getting between the airport, town, and ferry port
These three points — airport, Duong Dong, and Bai Vong port — form the triangle most visitors need to navigate.
- Airport to Duong Dong: ~10 km, 15–25 minutes. Grab is the default; GrabCar 120,000–200,000 ₫.
- Airport to Bai Vong port: ~20 km, ~30 minutes. Grab or taxi; expect 150,000–250,000 ₫.
- Duong Dong to Bai Vong port: ~25 km across the island, ~30–40 minutes. Grab, taxi, or a scooter on the cross-island road.
The cross-island road (roughly following the 47D route) is well-surfaced and fast. There are no significant tolls.
A note on the island’s size
It’s easy to underestimate how far apart things are until you’re on the road. Duong Dong to Ganh Dau in the far northwest is around 30 km. Duong Dong to An Thoi in the south is about 28 km. If you’re staying at a resort on Long Beach and want to visit the cable car at An Thoi one day and Starfish Beach the next, you’re looking at 50+ km of driving each time. That’s perfectly manageable on a scooter or with a hired car — but it’s not a walk, and a single Grab each way starts to add up.
Picking accommodation that’s near the things you most want to do reduces your transport overhead significantly. See where to stay in Phu Quoc for a breakdown of the main areas and who each suits. Browse hotels in Phu Quoc when you’re ready to compare options.
